Notes & Combos

After playing combo decks for the last two seasons, I wanted to play something a bit more control/midrange-ish, and trap monsters are quite fun, so this season I decided to climb with Odion. However, the idea of playing floodgates (like most people are doing in ranked) doesn't appeal to me, so I played a Fiendsmith package instead.

Honestly, I think this is the best version of the deck. Despite not having any crazy synergies, Fiendsmith complement the Odion cards quite well and offset their weaknesses: not only it strengthens your endboard and gives you more options when going 2nd, but also it helps baiting/forcing interaction to ensure your Man with the Mark/Treasures of the Kings resolve ("pure" Odion doesn't have much gas if your starter gets negated). Furthermore, it baits your opponent's Maxx C on your turn, so you're free to summon the trap monsters during your opponent's turn without worrying about the bug.

In addition to all that, since Fiendsmith is a small package, it leaves a lot of room for handtraps, which helps a lot - even though this is a trap-heavy deck, I still won more than half of my games going 2nd. Shout out to Skull Meister which, despite conflicting with Purge, helped me win so many games that I couldn't take it out.

At one point I tried Statue of Anguish Pattern but it doesn't feel necessary, it is too win-more in my opinion, you already have Silhouhatte Rabbit and Divine Serpent Apophis to pop cards.

The Yummy matchup is a bit rough though, since the trap monsters don't do much against their synchros (they can just tag out), and other than Marshmao they're all inherent special summons so Ceasar doesn't help much either. It can be winnable, but you need the right non-engine and/or a well-timed disruption (for example, using the Divine Serpent or Silhouhatte pop on the field spell they get with Snatchy can help).
