Notes & Combos

To see the general end board and tips for Runick Spright, see the Notes & Combos from my October 2023 version of Runick Spright. There are some differences in how you should make your board/play that I'll explain here.

  • SUPER SUPER IMPORTANT: Have a custom activation confirmation (found in duel settings) that has your toggle on at the start of the duel. Because of the Droll meta, you need to do a lot of your searching during the draw phase.

  • Search for Fountain/search with Tip/search with Blue from the Starter in your draw phase. Droll is very common and Runick Spright searches a lot. Limiting most of that drawing to the Draw Phase will limit the damage from Droll.

  • Chain block chain block chain block. Chain blocking is crucial for Runick Spright. If you don't know what chain blocking is, look it up.

  • Pay attention to your opponent's deck and actions while you're building your board.

    • If they use a lot of handtraps, they are very likely playing SHS. Use Red in your final board.
    • If they are playing a 60 card deck, it's Branded. Suggest to use Carrot for your board, especially if you have Freezing Curses and/or Ash.
    • If they have an activatable effect in hand and they're not using it when they should (Maxx C after special summon, Ash on Hugin/Fountain/Gigantic, Imperm on monster, D.D. Crow on Fountain search/Elf summon, etc.), it's very likely Lab. Use Carrot and try to save a CBTG or Ash for their furniture/trap activation.
    • Otherwise, just pay attention to your Runick banishes.
  • IP into Underworld Goddess will win you games. You are able to remove a monster from your opponent's board (useful for non-targetable monsters like Sanctifire Dragon or ruining Albaz's fusion effect) and has useful negating effects.

  • Runick Slumber against Visas/Mannadium is a good way to counter their destruction effects on their monsters.

---

The hits to Fountain and Runick Destruction last ban list definitely hurt the deck. It's still possible to make the same endboards as before, but it is slightly more prone to handtraps than before.

With the right hand, Runick Spright can beat practically any deck. Usually you don't get the perfect hand but most times you can cook something good enough to make your opponent scoop (people really hate playing against Runick lol). Branded, Snake-Eye, SHS, Mathmech, Lab, VS, etc are strong decks but they are beatable, especially if you go first.

Do your best to get Fountain on the board and keep it safe.

Specific Tips:

  • Branded: Lean into the Runick engine if you need to remove Mirrorjade and can't negate the destruction effect.
  • Lab: Prevent EEV from resolving.
  • Kashtira: Flashing Fire their Kashtiratheosis target.
  • Visas/Mannadium: Slumber their monster if needed.
  • Snake-Eye: Flashing Fire their Diabellstar if you can't negate.
