Notes & Combos

Lately the metagame of Master Duel has been fairly diverse with the recent weakening of the top decks and addition of some new decks. However, Konami's pulled a surprise on the meta and dropped Kewl Tune, the current best deck in the OCG, at nearly full power. The 2nd wave of support isn't even in the TCG yet. The only thing the deck is missing in MD is the powerful handtrap Fidraulis Harmonia, but the deck definitely doesn't need it to be Tier 1.

Here's a brief rundown of what Kewl Tune is all about. Kewl Tune is a Synchro archetype that consists entirely of Tuners. The main deck monsters all have an on-field effect that lets them use a Tuner from the hand as material for a Synchro Summon. They also all have effects when sent to the GY as Synchro Material. While cards like Kewl Tune Synchro and Cue lock you into Tuners, preventing hybrid builds and most generic Synchros, you can still summon the fantastic in-archetype Synchros as well as Zalen, a tricky omni-negate that plays around chain blocking.

Here are the strengths of Kewl Tune:

Perfect knowledge of the opponent's hand

  • If you thought K9 Noroi was annoying, you haven't seen anything like this before. Rotary lets you peek at your opponent's hand, and Cue allows you to stack your opponent's next draw. With perfect knowledge of your opponent's hand, a smart player will know exactly when and where to interact on the opponent's turn.

Adaptable endboard

  • Since the deck has access to perfect knowledge, they can adapt their endboard to whatever the opponent has in store. For example, if the opponent has Nibiru, the Kewl Tune player can either end turn before the 5th summon, or make Zalen by the 5th summon with Kewl Tune Synchro in hand.

Difficult to handtrap

  • Excluding something like Shifter and sometimes Droll, a single handtrap usually doesn't stop the deck from making plays. Negating a starter usually leads to them Synchro Summoning anyways since they can use Tuners in hand as material. Additionally, cards like Synchro Overtake and Kewl Tune Synchro function as excellent extenders to ensure they get to their chosen endboard.

Can attack the Extra Deck itself

  • Clip can banish a random ED monster from the opponent, and Crackle can look at the ED and directly banish 1 or potentially 3 monsters. It's a very rare effect that this deck definitely takes advantage of.

There's a new Tier 1 deck in town, so be prepared to see these musical monsters peek at your hand and rig your draws.
